Xian has done a great job on this LEGO rover. It utilises Lego Power Functions and the Raspberry Pi and can be controlled via a web browser. He explains his build, with block diagrams and details on wiring and explains his use of the Navio board for controlling things. Nice job, Xian. Read about it here.
That is a nice project.
However I am no fan of Lego and would prefer a metal
structure. Also a more autonomous Robot that is capable of obstacle avoidance and automatic pathway recognition (OPENCV). The latter being somewhat expensive

I’m sure this is just a first step and Xian may add more sensors in order to do the things that you suggest. I think in this instance he’s made the right choice going with LEGO as it needs to be fairly light – the speed of the motors isn’t exactly fast so the lighter the structure the better.
