This Instructable for a Raspberry Pi Snail Mail System was built by Paul Barber and his kids. It monitors a switch attached to a letterbox so that a Raspberry Pi knows when mail has been delivered. The Pi then triggers a webcam to take a picture and email it to you.
I love seeing projects like this from families just having fun with their Pi!
Someone over at Overclocked.tv has created a lipo-battery driven portable Pi and used two great components for functionality: a keyboard from a Nexus 7 case and, most excitingly, a viewfinder from a Sony DXC-3000 camcorder.
All this is packaged up in a box from a cassette used in the camcorder.
Embedded electronics site Circuit Cellar have teamed up with RS and Elektor and created an excellent free Raspberry Pi poster PDF for download.

In this article, the BBC covers the world of miniature computing and the explosion, in recent months, of devices into the market. It’s a good article but they would have been better advised not to sidebar some uncharitable comments from an unhappy Raspberry Pi customer who has clearly not understood what being an ‘early adopter’ means. Heigh ho! No publicity is bad publicity and Ryan Walmsley got a good link to his Rastrack.co.uk Pi-tracking site.
Dave Akerman’s PIE4 landed at approximately 2pm having reached a maximum height of 35,409m (~116,000 feet). The TARDIS-encased Raspberry Pi hit the ground in a field just off the B3353 near Whitley, Wiltshire. More details will be posted on Dave’s blog once he’s got back home and analysed the data.
Many thanks for the excellent coverage, particularly the live tracking map. Video feeds didn’t come through at my workplace (probably a firewall issue) but I had great fun watching the ascent, burst and descent virtually via the map.
