Helicarrier bed uses Raspberry Pi as a command centre

Andy wanted to do something special for his son. So, he took his inspiration from Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. and built a raised bed with a den underneath. He then filled the den with all manner of tech and Marvel stuff and then embedded a Raspberry Pi inside to control a missile launcher. The screen shows the picture from the Pi’s camera module (with torch for when it’s dark) allowing you to fire at will! The motorised door and keypad is controlled by an Arduino.

As a commenter on Hackaday said, he should get Galaga installed on the Pi! (Ref: The Avengers, in case you didn’t know!) Just a lovely idea and one which is sure to fill the minds of fathers everywhere with excitement and a certain amount of dread. Full build instructions and gallery are available on his blog.

Free 3D modelling app for the Raspberry Pi

3D Slash, based in France, has just released a free version of their 3D modelling app (also called 3D Slash) to download on their website. You need to register but once you have you have access to this point-and-click software that will enable you to prototype just by clicking on blocks in the view area. It looks fairly low-res, but it’s a great starter app to get you used to the concepts involved in designing for 3D printing. Read more here or visit their website. See a video of it in action below:

Official Raspberry Pi Projects Book published

Here’s a new publication from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Rather than print digital-only issues 31-35 individually, they have taken the ‘best bits’ from those issues and mashed them together to create the Projects Book. It has 200 pages and costs £12.99, which is comparable with other “magbooks” on the market. The book is available from WHSmith or online from the Swag store. Read more about it here.
